Bathroom Remodeling: Choosing Fixtures, Tile and Layout With Confidence

Few rooms involve as many choices in such a small space as the bathroom. Tub or shower, single or double vanity, large tile or small, chrome or brushed brass, every option affects how the room looks, how it works and how long it lasts. The secret to a confident remodel is making those choices in the right order, so each decision builds on the one before.

Start With How You Use the Room

Before you look at a single tile, think about how the bathroom needs to work. Is it a busy family bathroom where children bathe and everyone gets ready at once? A primary suite where you want a calm retreat? A guest bath that is used occasionally? Consider who uses it, at what times of day and what frustrates you about the current layout. Lack of storage, a cramped shower, poor lighting and a door that hits the vanity are all common complaints that a good remodel should solve.

It also helps to think ahead. If you plan to stay in your home for many years, features such as a curbless shower, a comfortable height toilet, blocking in the walls for future grab bars and wider doorways make the bathroom easier to use at every stage of life.

Choose the Layout First

Moving plumbing is one of the biggest factors in a bathroom budget, so decide early whether to keep fixtures where they are or relocate them. Keeping the toilet and shower drain in place usually saves money, while moving them can unlock a far better layout. A common transformation is replacing a little used tub with a generous walk in shower, or swapping a single vanity for a double in a shared bathroom.

Give each fixture enough room. Comfortable clearance in front of the toilet and vanity, a shower large enough to move freely and a door that opens without obstruction make a dramatic difference to how the room feels day to day.

Draw it before you buy it

A simple floor plan with fixture sizes and clearances reveals problems early. We prepare layout drawings so you can see exactly how the finished room will flow.

Tub, Shower or Both

Walk in showers are the most requested upgrade in bathroom remodeling. Frameless glass, a linear drain and a built in niche create a clean, open look that makes small rooms feel larger. A bench, handheld shower and thermostatic valve add comfort and safety. If you have young children or love a long soak, keeping a tub may still be the right choice. Freestanding tubs make a beautiful statement in larger bathrooms, while an alcove tub with a shower is the most space efficient option for family bathrooms.

Never Compromise on What You Cannot See

The most important parts of a bathroom are hidden behind the tile. Proper waterproofing membranes in the shower, correctly sloped shower floors, quality valves and a quiet, properly vented exhaust fan protect your home from leaks, mould and costly repairs. When budgets are tight, it is far better to choose simpler tile than to cut corners on waterproofing or ventilation.

Beautiful tile gets the compliments, but good waterproofing and ventilation keep the bathroom beautiful for years.

Choose a Vanity That Works Hard

The vanity is often the visual centrepiece of the bathroom and its main storage zone. Floating vanities create a modern, airy look and make floors easy to clean. Furniture style vanities bring warmth and character. Think about drawers rather than doors for easier access, an outlet inside a drawer for hair tools and a countertop material that resists stains, such as quartz. If two people share the room, a double vanity or a long single top with two sinks can end the morning rush.

Select Tile With a Plan

Tile is where many homeowners feel most overwhelmed, simply because the choices are endless. A useful rule is to limit yourself to a small number of tiles: one for the floor, one for the shower walls and perhaps one feature tile for a niche or accent wall. Larger format tiles create a calm, seamless look with fewer grout lines, while small mosaics provide grip on shower floors. Porcelain is durable, low maintenance and available in convincing stone and wood looks.

Consider grout colour carefully. A grout that closely matches the tile creates a quiet, continuous surface, while a contrasting grout highlights pattern. Always view samples together in the room's actual lighting before deciding.

Pick Fixtures and Finishes That Last

Faucets, shower trim and accessories set the style of the room. Matte black, brushed nickel, brushed gold and polished chrome each create a different mood. Choose quality fixtures with ceramic cartridges and solid construction, and keep finishes consistent throughout the room for a polished look. Water efficient toilets, faucets and showerheads lower water bills without sacrificing performance.

Layer the Lighting

Good bathroom lighting combines general ceiling light, task lighting at the mirror and a little ambient or accent light. Vertical sconces on either side of the mirror or a well designed lighted mirror give even, flattering light for grooming. A dimmable fixture or a soft night light makes late night visits easier on the eyes. If space allows, a window or skylight brings in natural light that makes any bathroom feel fresher.

Add Comfort and Smart Storage

Small comforts make a remodelled bathroom feel special. Heated floors are a favourite in cooler months, while a heated towel rail adds a touch of luxury. Recessed medicine cabinets, shower niches, open shelves for towels and tall linen cabinets keep counters clear. Hooks near the shower and a place for a laundry basket are simple additions that make daily life easier.
